Southern Museum Joins 13th Annual Museum Day Live!

September 6th, 2017 by Pam Davis

The Southern Museum will open its doors free of charge on Saturday September 23, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s thirteenth annual Museum Day Live! The event is an initiative in which participating museums across the US open their doors for free to those who download a Museum Day Live! Ticket, emulating the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based facilities which offer free admission every day. Over 200,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s event, and this year’s event is expected to attract more museum-goers than ever before.

This year, The Southern Museum will feature special hands-on activities, scavenger hunts, games, and challenges that the family can do together, all inspired by this year’s Museum Day Live! educational focus – Minecraft!  Guests will have a chance to explore electric circuits, ramps, and trains through family scavenger hunts, trivia games, and discovery stations from 9:30 am – 5 pm.  Enjoy an educator facilitated activity from 1 pm – 4 pm, and create a piston powered machine! Discover how the Museum’s existing displays and exhibits fit perfectly into the world of Microsoft’s Minecraft!

“The Southern Museum is pleased to participate again in this year’s Annual Museum Day Live and all that it represents. It is key that we make museums as accessible as possible and a safe place of learning for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. The Southern Museum is the Smithsonian in your neighborhood!” said Dr. Richard Banz, Executive Director.

The Museum Day Live! ticket is available for download at Visitors who present the Museum Day Live! ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues on September 23. One ticket per email address is permitted.
