August 4 – All Aboard for Steam Locomotives & the General
Discover the technology and development of the steam locomotive through one of the most famous locomotives of all – the General!

September 1 – Railroad Telegraphs & Signals
How do you communicate on the railroad? Investigate all the signals and lights found around the track and then practice your Morse Code skills! Learn how the invention of the telegraph revolutionized communications and railroad operations.

October 6 – Gandy Dancers
Learn about the diverse history of the railroad track workers who connected the country! In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, there will be discussion of the Mexican-American “traqueros,” who maintained railroad track in the Southwest.

November 10 – The Story of the Merci Boxcar
Did you know that the Southern Museum houses one of the best preserved Merci (French for “thank you”) Boxcars in the United States? Celebrate Veteran’s Day by learning more about this gesture of gratitude
from France after the world wars.

December 1 – Pullman Porters
How do trains showcase the struggle for civil rights? Explore the vital history and role of Pullman Porters through a 1/6 model of a Pullman car.
