While the peach has become the symbol of the state of Georgia, it is actually rare to our state, and not native to our agricultural climate. Find out how the South’s desire for a reputation makeover turned the peach into a cultural icon and the subsequent effect on southern, environmental, rural and agricultural history.

About the Speaker: 
William Thomas (Tom) Okie grew up in central Georgia and studied history at Covenant College and the University of Georgia. He is coordinator of the History Education program and professor of history and history education at Kennesaw State University. He serves as associate editor of the journal of Agricultural History and is the author of the prize-winning The Georgia Peach: Culture, Agriculture, and Environment in the American South (Cambridge University Press, 2016).
